Every heartbeat, every thought, and every muscle movement in your body runs on electricity. Your cells constantly send and receive tiny electrical signals, and those signals help control everything from how your tissues repair to how your body handles inflammation.
PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy works with that natural electrical system. It sounds futuristic, but it has been studied for more than 40 years, and some PEMF devices have had FDA clearance since the 1970s. Here’s what PEMF is, what the research shows, where the science is still growing, and why so many of our clients have made it part of their routine. What Is PEMF?
PEMF therapy uses a device, in our case a mat, that creates gentle, low-level electromagnetic fields that pulse on and off. These fields pass easily through clothing, skin, muscle, and bone, and they interact with the electrical activity of your cells.
PEMF is not the same as electrical stimulation like a TENS unit. Nothing is attached to your skin, and you won’t feel a shock or a tingle. Most people feel nothing at all except a gentle warmth and a deepening sense of relaxation. Our mat also includes infrared warmth, which many clients find especially soothing.
A session is simple. You lie down, fully clothed, and rest for 60 minutes. There are no needles, no medication, and no downtime.
The Cellular Science, Simplified
Every cell in your body has a small electrical charge across its outer membrane, a bit like a tiny battery. That charge helps cells move nutrients in and waste out, communicate with neighboring cells, and know when to repair or rest. When you’re injured, inflamed, stressed, or simply worn down, that cellular communication can get out of balance.
Researchers believe PEMF works in a few ways:It influences how cells communicate. Pulsed fields affect the movement of charged particles like calcium across cell membranes. Calcium is one of the body’s main “messenger” signals, and it helps trigger natural repair processes. It calms inflammatory signaling. One of the best-studied mechanisms involves adenosine receptors, specialized docking sites on cells that act as natural “brakes” on inflammation. A 2025 review in the journal Bioengineering explained how PEMF can increase the activity of these receptors, which helps quiet inflammatory pathways. An earlier review in the journal Bioelectricity found that PEMF helps regulate the release of both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory signals at different stages of the inflammatory response. It supports tissue repair. Lab and clinical studies have looked at PEMF’s role in bone healing, cartilage repair, and wound healing. That work is part of why PEMF is being studied across so many areas of health.
A simple way to picture it: think of your cells as a radio signal that has picked up some static. PEMF doesn’t force the body to do anything new. It helps clear the static so your body’s own repair systems can communicate more clearly. What the Research ShowsBone Healing:
The Longest Track Record
PEMF’s longest research history is in bone. In 1979, the FDA cleared a PEMF bone-healing device for nonunion fractures, which are broken bones that fail to heal on their own. In 2004, the FDA approved another PEMF device as an add-on to neck (cervical) fusion surgery for patients at high risk of the fusion not healing. Those clearances apply to specific prescription medical devices, but they show that PEMF’s effects on tissue have been taken seriously by the medical community for decades.
Joint Pain and Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is one of the most-studied uses of PEMF. A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis in Pain Research & Management combined 11 randomized controlled trials with 614 patients, mostly people with knee osteoarthritis. The researchers found that PEMF reduced pain and improved stiffness and physical function compared with sham (fake) treatment. The strongest results came from low-frequency PEMF.
The authors also noted limits. The studies varied a lot in how PEMF was delivered, most lasted only one to three weeks, and more research is needed on long-term results.
Back Pain
A 2016 systematic review in the Porto Biomedical Journal looked at six randomized trials of PEMF for low back pain. The researchers found a “clear tendency” toward less pain and better function with PEMF. They also noted that the studies were small and that more, larger studies are needed.
Post-Surgical Pain and Inflammation
One of the most interesting studies comes from plastic surgery. In a 2010 double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 24 women recovering from breast reduction surgery used either a real or a sham PEMF device. The PEMF group had significantly less pain in the hours after surgery, lower levels of IL-1 beta (an inflammatory signal) in their wound fluid, and used about half as much pain medication. That’s a small study, but it lines up well with what lab research shows about PEMF and inflammation.
An Honest Note on the Research
We’d rather give you the honest picture than oversell it. PEMF research is promising and growing, but it isn’t settled. Many studies are small, devices and settings vary widely, and not every benefit people report has been proven in large clinical trials. For example, a Cochrane review of PEMF and other electromagnetic treatments for fractures concluded that the evidence was still too limited to guide routine medical practice. What we can say is this: the cellular mechanisms are real and actively studied, the research on pain, joints, and inflammation is encouraging, and PEMF is well tolerated by most people. It’s a gentle, complementary option, not a replacement for medical care.
Everyday Benefits: Why Clients Keep Coming Back
Research tells part of the story. The rest comes from how people feel. Here’s how our clients use PEMF in everyday life.A calmer nervous system. Many clients describe a deep, settling relaxation that builds through the session. Some read, some breathe, and some fall asleep, which we consider a good sign. In a world that rarely slows down, an hour of true stillness is a gift to your nervous system.
Better rest.
A calmer body tends to mean a calmer night. Many clients tell us they sleep especially well after a session.Achy joints and everyday stiffness. Between the osteoarthritis research and our clients’ experience, joint comfort is one of the most common reasons people book. It’s a gentle option for knees, hips, and backs that feel the wear of daily life.
Recovery after hard work or workouts. Whether you farm, work on your feet all day, or train hard at the gym, PEMF is a passive way to support your body’s natural recovery without adding stress to tired muscles.
A proactive wellness habit. You don’t need an injury to benefit from rest and recovery. Many clients simply use PEMF as a regular part of taking care of themselves, the same way they might drink herbal tea or take a daily walk.
Getting the Most From Your Sessions
Drink water before and after. Good hydration supports your body’s natural processes, and many clients feel best when they drink a full glass after their session.
Be consistent. In the research, PEMF is usually used over a series of sessions, not just once. Many people notice the most benefit with regular visits.Pair it with healthy habits. PEMF works best as one part of a bigger routine that includes movement, good food, and rest.Combine services. Many clients pair PEMF with an AO Scan for a fuller picture of where their body may need support, or with an herbal consultation for a more personalized visit.
Who Should Check With a Doctor First
PEMF is well tolerated by most people, but it isn’t right for everyone. Please talk to your doctor before trying PEMF if you:
* Are pregnant
* Have epilepsy or a seizure disorder
* Use a pacemaker, defibrillator, insulin pump, or other implanted electronic device
* Take medication through a skin patch
* Have a serious or ongoing medical condition
We’re always happy to answer your questions before you book.
