Ashwagandha has been a cornerstone of Ayurvedic herbalism in India for more than 3,000 years. Its Sanskrit name means “smell of the horse,” for its earthy aroma and the strength and vitality it was said to give. Ashwagandha is one of the most celebrated adaptogens, herbs that help the body adapt to everyday stress. It’s traditionally used to promote calm, steady energy during the day and deep, restful sleep at night, and to support a balanced mood, stamina and overall vitality. Unlike stimulants, it works gently over time, so it’s best taken consistently for several weeks. Ways to use it: Moon milk: simmer 1 teaspoon of root in a cup of milk (dairy or plant-based) with cinnamon, cardamom and a little honey for a cozy bedtime drink. Tea: simmer 1 to 2 teaspoons of the cut root in 1½ cups of water for 15 minutes, then strain. Blends: pair it with holy basil, lemon balm or chamomile for a calming tea. Cautions: not for use during pregnancy or while nursing. Talk with your provider if you have a thyroid or autoimmune condition, or if you take thyroid medication, sedatives or medication for anxiety, blood pressure or diabetes. Avoid it if you’re sensitive to nightshades, since ashwagandha is in the same family as tomatoes and peppers. Sold by the ounce.
